Ready, Set, GO! Driving Tips When Using Your Mobility Scooter and Powerchair

Tips Everyone Should Know...

Unless you own a non classified vehicle, you do not need a driving license or any vehicle handling experience to own and drive a mobility scooter or powerchair. If you’re new to owning and driving a scooter or powerchair, then don’t let the prospect of taking your new device out worry you; we’ve rounded up some key tips that every scooter or powerchair driver should know.

From The Pavement to The Road: Driving Tips

Whether you’re driving on the pavement, in pedestrian areas, or on the road, there are some simple things to remember that apply to all terrains and environments.

  • Take it slow: Check your speed and avoid going too fast.

A slow driving pace keeps yourself and others safe, and protects your scooter from potential damage.

  • Keep an eye out for kerbs and obstructions.

Being aware of your surroundings minimises the risk of bumps and crashes.

  • Prepare for the weather, both in terms of clothes and device accessories.

Being ready for all weathers means you get the most out of your powerchair, no matter the time of year or season.

  • Set off with a full charge, especially for long outings.

Nobody likes being stranded! If you lose charge while out and about, getting you and your scooter home can be a real challenge. Charge overnight ahead of a big trip.

  • Loud and Clear: Don’t be afraid of using your horn to make people aware of your presence, as you may not be in their eyeline while seated in your scooter or powerchair.

Making others aware of you prevents them from accidentally stepping out into your path and injuring themselves or you as the driver of the scooter.

  • Check first if you are allowed to drive on the road or pavements.

For both legal and safety reasons, knowing your vehicle class is critical. Use our guide to vehicle classifications to find out where you can drive your mobility scooter or powerchair.
